Shakhtar Donetsk's Danylo Sikan misses open goal against Celtic
The football season might only be a few months old but Shakhtar Donetsk's Danylo Sikan produced a strong contender for miss of the campaign.
With Shakhtar drawing 1-1 with Celtic, in the 72nd minute Mykhaylo Mudryk led a surging attack up the left wing, skipping with ease over Cameron Carter-Vickers' lunging slide tackle and leaving himself with an unimpeded run towards Joe Hart's goal.
As Hart advanced out and Celtic defender Moritz Jenz closed down the options, Mudryk could have pulled the trigger but unselfishly he slipped the ball to Sikan to his right, who had all of the goal to aim at from eight yards.
What happened next, Sikan will not live down. His first touch was so heavy, the ball bounced off his left foot and agonizingly went wide of the post.
Chris Sutton said on the BT Sport commentary: "That is Ronny Rosenthal all those years ago... That's horrendous. I mean he can pop that in first time, he's just caught in two minds. The more you see it, it's awful, it really is."
It was an embarrassing miss that could prove decisive as Shakhtar are third in their group, three points off RB Leipzig, who earned a 3-2 win over Real Madrid, with one game to play.
For Celtic, with the match ending with the points shared, it meant they will not play in European football after the World Cup break.
Giorgos Giakoumakis had given the Scottish side the lead at half-time but a brilliant finish from Mudryk in the 58th minute levelled the match.
Celtic had an excellent chance to swiftly regain the lead when Giakoumakis played in Kyogo Furuhashi but the Japan forward scuffed a weak effort straight at the goalkeeper before they were let off by Sikan's terrible miss.
The result consigned Celtic to a bottom-placed finish in Group F ahead of their final game against holders Madrid in Spain next week and blocked their escape route to the Europa League.
