Where was A Man Called Otto filmed? Street filming location explored
Tom Hanks’s latest film, A Man Called Otto, takes place almost entirely on one street but where is the real-life location and where else was the movie filmed?
The filming locations behind a movie can play a key part in how authentic the final product will feel as real-life backdrops and sets will almost always look better on camera than a green screen and CGI background.
Recently released on Netflix in the US, the Tom Hanks-starring film, A Man Called Otto, leans heavily towards the former as most of its filming takes place on a singular street but where is the filming location in question and where else did the film crew use during production?
A Man Called Otto release date and plot preview
Originally released in cinemas on December 29, 2022, A Man Called Otto has been given a new lease of life in 2023 as the film has also been added to Netflix in the US on May 6.
Based on the New York Times bestseller, A Man Called Ove, the slightly retitled A Man Called Otto stars Tom Hanks as its titular character, a grump of a man who no longer sees purpose in life after the death of his wife.
As the film begins, Otto is ready to end it all but when a lively young family moves in next door, his plans are interrupted as the quick-witted Marisol challenges him to see life differently.
An unlikely and heartwarming friendship is formed that turns Otto’s view of the world, and the people within it, on its head.
Where was A Man Called Otto filmed?
A Man Called Otto is both set and filmed in the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Filming on the project took place between February and May 2022.
The central location of the movie is Otto’s street, which is a real-life location in suburban Pittsburgh and is located at Gilliland Place in Bellvue, which can be found just off the Ohio River to the northwest of Pittsburgh’s city center.
As well as the film’s central street, several other locations in and around Pittsburgh also feature including the Busy Beaver hardware store in Lawrenceville, Stangl’s Bakery and Merchant in Ambridge, Oakmont’s St Thomas Episcopal Church, Sewickley Cemetery, the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, Monroeville Senior Citizens Center, North Park, Max’s Allegheny Tavern and Simpson Reinforcing, a steel reinforcing plant in Arnold to the northeast of Pittsburgh.
Some filming also took place outside of Pittsburgh too, with the Central Union train terminal in Toledo, Ohio playing host to a key train station scene while Niagara Falls in Ontario, Canada also features when Otto recounts a visit he had with his late wife, Sonya.
Other projects filmed in Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh may not have a reputation for hosting many film and TV productions, but the city has actually been a popular location with film crews for decades, with almost 2,500 titles having filmed there in some capacity.
As well as A Man Called Otto, Pittsburgh has also featured in the TV series The West Wing, Justified, Mindhunter and Banshee.
While in terms of movies, Pittsburgh has a rich history of moviemaking with films such as Marvel’s The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, Free Guy, Independence Day, Pretty Woman, RoboCop, Groundhog Day, The Silence Of The Lambs, Netflix’s The Pale Blue Eye and Tom Hanks’s own A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood all using the city for filming.
A Man Called Otto is available to stream now on Netflix in the US.
